Diversity of Amphibians

All the present day amphibians are included in three extant orders Apoda (Caecilians), Salientia (Frogs and Toads) and Caudata (Salamanders and newts). Order Salientia being the largest, with 29 families harbors 4837 species, where as Caudata has 10 families and 502 species and Apoda with 5 families and 165 species. In all, 5504 species have been recorded from all continents. Most people are familiar with frogs, toads, newts and 
salamanders, but are less familiar with Caecilians, which superficially resemble large 
earthworms. Little is known about most Caecilians as they mostly live hidden underground or underwater. All amphibians are cold-blooded animals. There are over 7,400 species of amphibians, and they inhabit all continents except Antarctica, living in varied habitats such as rain-forests, rivers and streams, deserts and alpine environments.
